The aim of this study was to plan and implement a cultural experience program and to verify
its effectiveness and significance. Therefore, a tatami production workshop was conducted with
local tatami craftsman. The survey results showed that both the participants and the guest teacher attached importance to learning about culture through communication with others. It
was also found that the cultural experience program helped to deepen intercultural understanding, and that intercultural communicative competence became active through the
guest teacher.
