This paper examines the Eight-Legged Essay during the Tianqi (1621–1627) and Chongzhen (1628–1644) reign periods at the end of the Ming dynasty, showing that the Eight-Legged Essays of this period included writings on proposals concerning current affairs that were unrelated to the interpretation of the Four Books.
