Abstract Alternative
Approaches combining natural and social factors in understanding disaster recovery, and valuing community resilience for recovering/reducing damage are receiving considerable attention since the1990s; there is a great expectation in such approaches not simply to avoid disaster risk but rather to focus on survival strategies to compensate for damages. The purpose of this study is to examine and clarify the formation of such survival strategies by analyzing the disaster reconstruction from the 2010 Mt Merapi eruption, focusing on the sufferer’s strategies to compensate for damages through adaptation of the newly formed tourism opportunities. Valuing of community resilience contributing to recovery disaster damage is discussed.
