Abstract Alternative | The positive contribution of the tourism industry to the economy is almost undeniable. However, too often the environment pays a high price for the overexploitation of natural resources on which the industry depends. One aspect, the connection between tourism and waste, is an often-overlooked topic, although solid waste management is a universal issue which affects almost every single person in the world. This paper addresses the importance of including waste management in the discussion about the future of the tourism industry, drawing conclusions from one published article about Wakayama prefecture, and identifying future research trajectories.
