Abstract Alternative | This paper examines the establishment of the “Himawari Class” at Tsurumaki Elementary School in Shinjuku, Tokyo, in 1960, from the perspective of parents’ demands for education and medical care in the community and the involvement of school education in the problems of children with severely and profoundly disabilities and children with severe and multiple disabilities that became apparent in the1960s. Furthermore, we examined the situation of the practice there, and the contents of “Together with friends”and “Small buds are sprouting now” (selected and published by the Ministry of Education), which were filmed and edited from 1970 to 1971, and showed that the practice at the “Himawari Class” has historical significance for the education of children with severely and profoundly disabilities and children with severe and multiple disabilities in school education.
