This paper examines the eight-legged essays of Xiong Bolong (1617–1679), who is thought to have initiated the eight-legged essay style of the Qing dynasty. The essay shows that Xiong Bolong's eight-legged essays, unlike the eight-legged essays at the end of the Ming dynasty, adopted an empirical style, in which he did not write his own opinions.
