The aim of this study is to investigate the expurgation of militarism and imperialism from the English textbooks Eigo and Kotoka-Eigo (published in 1944) conducted after the Japanese surrender in August 1945. This paper analyzes 11 inked-out copies of the English textbooks and especially focuses on 5 recently-found copies. These are prominent historical documents that offer us an insight into the reality of the drastic changes from the wartime militaristic education to the postwar democratic education. This study presents the details of methods and substance deleted from the teaching materials. The expurgated books show us the importance of subject matter in personality development of students.
